As trainers, our constant physical presence could be compromising our clients’ mind-body intelligence and negatively affecting their abilities to comply with their exercise programs. They may have learned trainer-efficacy, not self-efficacy. Gain an understanding of how compliance coaching shifts clients from an external focus of control (trainer-efficacy) to an internal focus of control (self-efficacy). Teach them to take personal responsibility and stimulate their internal drive to succeed.
Susan Block-Vezina holds a degree in exercise physiology and is an ACE faculty member. She is president and founder of The Association of Fitness by Phone® Coaches.
Tiffany Crate, MS, holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology and teaches clinical kinesiology at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. She was named the 2004 Master Fitness by Phone® Coach of the Year.
