Elizabeth Applegate, PhD

Elizabeth Applegate, PhD, is a nationally renowned expert on nutrition and fitness and is a faculty member in the nutrition department at the University of California, Davis. She is the author of several books including, Nutrition Basics for Better Health & Performance, Bounce Your Body Beautiful, Encyclopedia of Sports and Fitness Nutrition and Eat Smart Play Hard. Dr. Applegate serves as a nutrition consultant for several professional athletes, including the Oakland Raiders.

Session Format: Lecture
Trainers are always being asked about the efficacy of sport nutrition products. This session will address the current information on fueling for exercise, sports drinks and fitness waters, energy bars, use of carbohydrate gels and other carbohydrate products such as Sports Beans(TM). Recovery products and their uses will also be discussed.

Endurance athletes have very special nutritional needs. Dr. Applegate will discuss training cycles and their impact on nutrient needs, macronutrient concerns, and eating and hydration strategies for competition. This session also includes menu and meal planning ideas.
